World Diabetes Day Hero: Padmasree Mohanlal

World Diabetes Day Hero title is awarded by IDF to someone who is active in promoting the diabetes cause or are engaging, motivating and leading others to take steps toward creating healthier lives.Padmasree Mohanlal was honoured by the IDF by awarding him the World Diabetes Day Hero title for being the spokesman for prevention of diabetes and creating awareness among the masses at Diabetes Kerala 2012, state wide launch at Rama Varma Hall, Kochi on 12th Nov 2012.

Diabetes Kerala 2012 organized by Jothydev’s Diabetes Research Centre and P.Kesavadev Trust supported by International Diabetes Federation(IDF) was one of the largest anti diabetes campaigns in the history of Kerala from Nov 12-25 for 14 days with 14 different programs covering all 14 districts in Kerala.

Though not a patient by himself, his commitment to the society is a reason for Mohanlal’s active campaign against diabetes which has evolved as the most dreaded expensive disease with catastrophic complications.



Ø Dr. Mohanlal Viswanathan Nair (born 21 May 1960) known mononymously as Mohanlal,
is regarded as one of the finest actors in Indian cinema and is a cultural icon.
Ø He was elected as most popular Keralite in a 2006 online poll conducted by CNN-IBN on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Kerala's formation.

Ø In 2001, the Government of India honored him with the Padma Shri, India's fourth highest civilian honour, for his contributions to Indian cinema.
Ø He has won four Indian National Film Awards — two Best Actor Awards, one Special Jury Award for acting, and one Award for Best Film as producer along with six Kerala State Film Awards for Best Actor.
Ø In 2009, he became the first actor to be given the honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Territorial Army of India 122TE.
Ø In 2010 he received an honorary doctorate from Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit, Kerala.

Contributions in the field of Diabetes

Ø Despite hectic schedules, his high preference to healthy lifestyle makes him a non-diabetic celebrity and an ardent advocate of healthy living. Ø Though an ambassador in various health campaigns, he has been consistently involved in diabetes awareness campaigns with Dr. Jothydev Kesavadev for the past 15 years.
Ø His active participation in the World Diabetes Day events helped create awareness about diabetes among the masses.
Ø His punch dialogues and messages in the video film ‘Diabetes Chat’ with Dr. Jothydev Kesavadev on “Causes of Diabetes and its Prevention” were well received by the public. He openly discussed how he lives a healthy life, importance of daily routine exercise and how he prevents diabetes, high blood pressure and high lipids. He delivers key messages on exercise, healthy diet, prevention of diabetes, preventing obesity in children, promoting exercise among all age groups etc. (
Ø His unique and prolific style of delivering the diabetes awareness messages in various health and talk shows in Amrita TV, Asianet and Soorya TV helped generate awareness among the populace.
Ø He has been into massive diabetes public health campaigns and media events through
various events organized by Jothydev's Diabetes & Research Centre.

Contributions in the field of Geriatrics

Ø He is also involved with geriatrics and campaigns for healthy aging along with Dr. Jothydev Kesavadev.
Ø He has been part of WHO programs on geriatrics ‘Healthy aging makes the difference’, ‘Global Embrace’ organized by Dr. Jothydev Kesavadev.
Ø He is running an old age home for aged and homeless mothers at Thrissur in Kerala
Ø His Society takes care of more than 2000 aged mothers taking care of their daily requirements and treatment including dialysis.


Ø Eye donation
Ø Mohanlal has been actively involved in campaigns and pledges on eye donation.
Ø A mass movement for eye donation in the youth has been promoted by him.
Ø A whole batch of MBBS students from Medical Colleges pledged for donating their eyes under his influence.
Ø The Fans Associations of Mr. Mohanlal are also following his footsteps and engages in various health related activities.

Ø Organ donation
Ø This iconic actor has officially pledged to donate all his vital organs after death.
Ø He is recipient of the prestigious Indian Medical Association award in 2003 and is the only non medical person to have earned this honour.

Ø AIDS and Cancer Awareness
Ø He is the Goodwill Ambassador of AIDS awareness campaign by Kerala AIDS Control Society for which he acted in short films.
Ø The Govt. of Kerala has associated with him for several of its health campaigns to remove the stigma on AIDS ‘Fight against disease not against the victim’. This message has been successfully and effectively spread among the public utilizing the star value of this celebrity.
Ø He plays active role in campaigns on cancer awareness by the Kerala Government, Polio eradication programs etc to name a few.
Ø Mohanlal also organizes huge campaigns on blood donation which has been promoted by millions of his Fans Associations.
